BS 1452, Flake Graphite Cast Iron Properties

This British standard specifies minimum tensile strengths of eight grades of flake graphite cast iron as determined on test pieces from separately cast test samples. It does not specify the properties of castings made in the material.

When tested in accordance with appendix A the minimum tensile strength of the specimen shall be as given in table 1.

Note. The results obtained against any particular grade may be deemed acceptable if the specified minimum strength is exceeded by up to 100 N/mm2

The dimensions of the test piece are as given in table 2.

The cooling rate of cast-on samples will be more representative of the cooling rate of a casting than a separately cast test sample when the casting thickness is greater than 20mm and its mass greater than 20kg.
