The Difference between Cast Iron and Carbon Steel:
Both Cast iron and carbon steel are the alloy of iron and
carbon. The fundamental difference between cast iron and carbon
steel is the carbon content. From the point of metallographic
figure, carbon content above 2.08% (some boundary at 2.11%) is
for iron and under 2.08% is for steel.
But generally in practical application, we call it wrought iron
or pure iron when carbon content is less than 0.03%; We call it
steel when the carbon content in 0.1 - 1.7%. According to the
carbon content, steel is divided into low carbon steel
(C≤0.25%), medium carbon steel (C≤0.25~0.60%) and high carbon
steel (C > 0.60%).
Generally low or medium carbon steel is for structural steel,
high carbon steel is for tool steel.
