The Best Material Grades for Cast Iron Cradle Bracket


The typical material grades for cast iron cradle brackets are GGG40, GGG50 and EN-GJS-450-10.

Dandong Foundry has produced various cast iron cradle brackets for over 20 years, so we have rich experience to introduce good material grades for this product.

In the past, the most of cradle brackets for hydraulic trucks were made by steel fabrication, welded by steel plates, or by steel castings.

Steel fabrication is not a good method to produce cradle bracket. The two axles need to bear very large weight, but they have to be welded on the bracket, so this position is the most breakable point.

Steel castings are good choice, this is why cast steel brackets were popular for many years. However, the steel casting prices are very high, so the price is a problem.

Ductile iron cradle brackets have been popular for many years, they are the best alternative choice for the steel castings. Ductile iron brackets have high tensile strength and about 50% lower price than steel castings. This is why many clients have changed their material into ductile iron.

The question is, which material grade is the best choice for cast iron cradle brackets.

According to the European standard EN1563, they are EN-GJS-400-15 (or 400-18), EN-GJS-450-10 and EN-GJS-500-7.

According to the Germany standard DIN1693, they are GGG40 and GGG50. There is no grade GGG45 in this standard, but it should have this grade.

The equivalent grades of EN-GJS-450-10 are ASTM A536 65-45-12 in USA, QT450-10 in China, and ISO 450-10. So, this material grade is a real one.

Let's compare these material grades!

GGG40 (EN-GJS-400-15) has normal tensile strength min. 400 Mpa, but it has the best elongation min. 15%, so it has the best ductility. If your trucks are used in the cold areas, then it is a good choice, because this material grade has a good ductility at low temperatures.

GGG50 (EN-GJS-500-7) has high tensile strength min. 500 Mpa, but its elongation is min. 7%, so its ductility is relatively bad, the good point is its tensile strength is very high, so some clients prefer to use it too.

EN-GJS-450-10 has medium tensile strength and medium elongation, so its properties are more comprehensive. Therefore, more and more clients are choosing this material grade.

As our experience, both GGG40 and EN-GJS-450-10 grades are the good choices for cast iron cradle brackets. If you are not sure which one is suitable for you, then you could choose EN-GJS-450-10, it will not let you down.
